An OPEN MIC with a difference in this acoustically excellent bar. I go to open mic nights as a cheap way of hearing live music. I invite four acts down who I have heard and like. I ask them to bring someone who they like down with them and I put ads up or talk to strangers with instruments to come down. I guarantee myself four acts that I know Im going to like and I hope that five will come down who will surprise me. What I think is good is the guarantee of a certain quality and a few surprises for everyone. I hope this works out really well for the audience and the performers. The new, who may be beginners, will definitely be given support from the musicians and singers Ive invited. They are all fine people. Everyone will get to hear GREAT, FREE, LIVE MUSIC every Thursday. My mate Pete, who runs the laptop repair place next door says The thing is, if you dont like one, youll like another. I hope youll like them all. Band Founded in 1994, Chris Jagger’s Atcha! are now hotter than ever and are one of very few UK bands that can handle cajun, R&B, zydeco, blues and country in an authentic and original fashion. The first CD, “Atcha” (Sequel Records) and the follow-up “Channel Fever” (Latent Talent) established Chris Jagger as a talented song-writer and singer. His songs are definitely in a different bag from brother’s Mick, but this hasn’t prevented them collaborating on various occasions. Chris is backed by a band of great musicians. Charlie Hart brings to the band feel and experience gained from his time in Ronnie Lane’s Slim Chance. Like Charlie, the fine drummer Malcolm Mortimore has been in the band from the beginning. The line up is completed by guitar prodigy Jim Mortimore and the brilliant bass player Paul Emile. Chris Jagger’s Atcha! rock any festival or club they play at. The songs are seasoned, witty and warm and the band easily fills the dance floor. Strong original material is complemented by covers ranging from Zydeco grooves to rock classics from the likes of Johnny Allen, the Meters and Chuck Berry. www.myspace.com/chrisjaggersatcha

Ekstravaganza

23/07/10 Ekstravaganza in London, SE17 1LB Corsica Studios UK
Time: 8:00pm. Admission: £8. Age restrictions: All Ages/Licensed. Box office: 020 7703 4760. Address: Unit 5, Farrell Court. Friday 23rd July 8pm till 6am Ekstravaganza #5 – The Summer Special Pre-party BBQ and cocktails outside from 8 pm – 11pm with: Discossession (Japan/London) / Dubby (Japan) Room 1 Prins Thomas / The Mole (Live) / Psychemagik / Jonny Nash Room 2 Ivan Smagghe / Sean Johnston / Chee Shimizu Corsica Studios, 4/5 Elephant Road, London, SE17 1B Tel: 020 7703 4760 Web: www.corsicastudios.com Entry is £5 on the door before 10pm then the usual £8 / £10 / £12. Since pitching up at Corsica Studios last September, Ekstravaganza has made quite an impact on our fair city hosting some of the biggest names from the worlds of cosmic disco, leftfield house and techno, such as Lindstrom, Chateau Flight and Bjorn Torske, alongside resident DJ Prins Thomas. Now with the sun shining down on London and the air thick with the drone of pollen drunk bumblebees, what better time is there to contemplate the hopefully long-hot summer ahead and put a big fat mark in your diary for the Ekstravaganza/Corsica Studios summer party. For this summer special, Corsica Studios will be throwing the doors open early for early evening cocktails, BBQ and DJ sets from Japan’s Dubby and Discossession crew in the courtyard. Then as the sun sets, the fun and games indoors begin with another lineup of internationally acclaimed DJs and producers hand picked by Prins Thomas himself. In the main room we have Ekstrvaganza regulars Psychemagik and Discossession’s Jonny Nash warming things up for one of Canada’s most acclaimed producers The Mole. With releases on labels such as Kompakt, Wagon Repair and of course Full Pupp, The Mole is sure to have the main room jumping before he hands over to Prins Thomas. In room 2 we have more from the Discossession crew as the collective’s Chee Shimizu lines up against Hardway Brother’s Sean Johnston, a veteran of labels as diverse and brilliant as Sabres of Paradise and History Clock and Parisian Ivan Smagghe, former member of the genre defining Blackstrobe and one of the most influential DJs of the past decade. So that’s it cocktails, BBQ, and the finest cosmic disco, techno, house and sun kissed Balearic beats London has to offer. Elephant and Castle may be lacking golden beaches and warm seas of Ibiza but come one is there anywhere you’d rather be tonight? (the answer’s no just in case you were wondering) At the time of writing this the sun is shining on London, the air is thick with the drone of pollen drunk bumblebees and with England out of the World Cup we can concentrate we still have people in both the World Cup and Wimbledon. Life’s not bad, so what better time to contemplate the hopefully long-hot summer ahead and put a big fat mark in your diary for the Ekstravaganza/Corsica Studios summer party. Discossession is a multi-faceted experimental music project consisting of 4 members: Chee, Dr Nishimura, Jonny Nash and Zecky. Ever heard of Bobby Orr or the Rocket number 9? Neither had The Mole until he moved to Montreal from Canada’s west coast. And now he loves them. Perhaps there is something magical in the humble success of these men that inspires. Who doesn’t love a reluctant hero? Dance music fans in Victoria and Vancouver in the 90s heard a lot of The Mole in his infancy. His mentors, believing he had a natural talent, pushed him from his DJ beginnings into music production. This natural talent was, in reality, mountains of hard work consummated in secret not unlike the rigorous discipline kung fu students undertake in those wonderful bamboo forests. For The Mole though this retreat took the form of long winters in the French and arguably the cultural capital of Canada, Montreal. Long, cold winters indeed. It was only natural that the city’s storied disco story would fit him well. Warm people and cold nights warming blood like so much sap in spring. The Mole is often reminded of his voyageur past (as an 18th generation Canadian he is very proud of his French and English roots) when navigating the graveyards of vinyl that abound in his hometown. What could make a black crack addict feel more at home in this cold climate? I tell you what: 7 years of residency at the Laika bar and numerous appearances at the MUTEK Festival. Enough about why The Mole has chosen to make his burrow in the storied city, let’s talk about the music. Urb magazine named him one of the ‘next 100’ in 2004. His live set at MUTEK 2004 was one of the top ten in the Village Voice Critics’ Poll 2004, followed by 2005’s collaboration with long time friend and band mate Mathew Jonson ‘Dirt Road and a Boat From Soundwave’ on Kompakt’s Speicher was received with critical acclaim. As were his releases that year on Philpot, Musique Risquée and Revolver. 2005 also saw the reunion of the Modern Deep Left Quartet on Wagon Repair, probably the greatest source of pride for the molito to date. There is also what The Mole refers to as the ‘starchy root machine’. And with a little like that, it should spark some interest! Anyway, it is a performance in which a minimum of 5 turntables are all playing loops that are either manufactured or hand made. With this The Mole then manipulates them, in a traditional DJ sense, with some effects to bump it up (what he confesses is quite a psychedelic experience for him). And although he has, because of other projects had to put this endeavor on the back burner for a little while, he still gets questioned on when he will bring it back. ‘I’ve only ever don it in Montreal because I think the number of tables scares people and it is fairly experimental… though terribly techno as well’. With his 2006 ‘In my song/Acadian’ being signed to a Sven Vath mix and a part time collaboration with Paddy from Cobblestone Jazz as the ‘Smokin Posties’ releasing their first remix on itiswhatitis, things were heading in the right direction for The Mole. 2007 saw further standout releases on Wagon Repair and late in the year a relocation to Europe, where he’d spent much of the summer months touring. Now 2008 heralds even greater things as The Mole releases his debut album ‘As High As The Sky’ on Wagon Repair and prepares to tour around it across the globe. Plus there’s the release of singles for Prins Thomas Ful Pupp imprint and there’s plans afoot to create a create diggers wet dream of a 7” label with fellow Canadian Koosh, code named Sticky Fingers. In some ways all this begs the question of ‘why Bobby Orr and Rocked Richard’. In the end The Mole insists that he’s ‘just a hockey player’. Wait that’s not right! He doesn’t even play hockey. In fact, he can barely skate! But he does love music with a humble and honest gratitude that can be heard throughout his work. SEAN JOHNSTON Sean Johnston has been DJ’ing since his formative years in the frozen North. Acid House Veteran, Techno Survivor, Hardway Bros, Beard Scientist and Freelance Disco Consultant he has played at some of London’s landmark clubs including The Promised Land, Sabre Sonic, Club UK, Final Frontier and Disco Bloodbath. His productions, alongside fellow Hardway Bros, Jake Davies and a mysterious South Londoner known only as Rico have graced Sabres of Paradise, Third Mind, Flashcomm and more recently Beard Science, Pointless Edits and cult Norwegian act Mungolian Jetset’s label Luna Flicks. Sean’s DJ’ing style described by FACT Magazine as “Future Disco” is hard to pin down to one convenient genre, taking in house, disco, re-edits, techno and frankly anything else that takes his fancy. Recent gigs at East Village with Andrew Weatherall, a stellar set at Disco Bloodbath and a super freaky down-tempo set on Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space radio show helped him secure a founding residency at Cable. Sean is currently working on new Hardway Bros productions and his new DJ residency (alongside Andrew Weatherall) – A Love From Outer Space at intimate East London space, The Drop Related post.

Tour: Concerts
25/06/10 Hadouken in Lewisham Dirty South UK
Time: 7:00pm. Admission: £8 adv.. Age restrictions: No Minors. Box office: 07590 526775. FRIDAY 25TH JUNE 19.00 – 02.00 £10 DOOR £8 ADV. I(HEART)..MUSIC PROMOTIONS presents I(HEART)..LIVE AT DIRTY SOUTH w/ HADOUKEN DJ SET This night has certainly hit the ground running at Dirty South and now six gigs in and after hosting The Holloways, Kids Love Lies, Kid British, Flashguns and Babyshambles DJ Set, they have been digging deep into their grey matter and produced another stormer of a night with with Hadouken! on site for an exclusive DJ set! Hadouken! released their hugely-anticipated second album, ‘For The Masses’, in January this year, this a follow-up to 2008, 100,000 selling debut ‘Music For An Accelerated Culture’ and is released on Hadouken!’s own Surface Noise Recordings. ‘For The Masses’ is a landmark modern dance-rock album that cements Hadouken!’s reputation as Britain’s most forward-thinking and dynamic young band. “We know what our fans want,” says singer James Smith. “They want it hard and they want it fast. I want this record to sound good over a 1000 kilowatt sounds system or on a Nokia phone on the back of a bus. We don’t want to discriminate. We just want to make immediate contact.” ‘For The Masses’ evolves the edge of your seat meld of twenty ton club rhythms, furious guitars and keen-witted 21st century lyrical journals located on ‘Music For An Accelerated Culture’ by delivering ten tracks that are even harder, even louder, even more rhythmic and even more tightly focused than anything they’ve attempted before. If an historic comparison was to be attempted, cast your mind back to the earliest, comparatively sketchy works by the likes of the Prodigy or Chemical Brothers. Then recall the impact when each delivered ‘Fat Of The Land’ and ‘Dig Your Own Hole’. That’s the kind of leap forward successfully maneuvered here. Britain’s next great dance-rock band have arrived. “I feel like the stars have been aligning for us,” says James. “The Prodigy have come back with a massive hit record. I’ve seen Chase N Status and Pendulum rise to the fore-front. We’re cut from the same cloth as all that but I think we’re doing something really new and exciting with this album. It’s a big, big progression. The time is right for us.” It goes without saying that this event will be a road block and with the tickets cheaper in advance than on the door, it is not rocket science to know what you need to do in order to make sure you are one of the lucky few to be rocking the dancefloor. In addition, there will also be six bands joining the occasion, to get you in the mood playing some of the freshest indie beats. Not a night for the faint hearted, get involved and… Listen Up!
