Opera in the Park returns with Hatstand Opera

The delightful Opera in the Park live performance is back for one night only on Wednesday 26 July in the leafy setting of Victoria Park, Portsmouth. Hatstand Opera return to thrill and entertain all ages with their iconic opera highlights show “Golden Moments from Opera”.

Hatstand Opera on stage in Victoria Park, Portsmouth

The live performance is the culmination of a month of opera in Portsmouth, which includes live relays from the Royal Opera House in London on the Big Screen in Guildhall Square.

The performance is also a welcome return for the Hampshire-based touring opera company, who last delighted audiences in Portsmouth in the same location back in 2010.

And, by a spooky coincidence, the Hatstand Opera cast includes baritone Jochem van Ast, who has just finished performing at …the Royal Opera House Covent Garden!

Make a night of it

Kirsty Young, Director of Hatstand Opera, said:

“We are delighted to be back singing in Victoria Park this summer. It’s a lovely little oasis of calm, or at least, it will be until our soprano racks up to her top notes! Even if you don’t think you know any opera, come along and enjoy the show. We’ll sing all sorts of items people will recognise without realising it, as used in adverts, TV shows and blockbuster films. Best of all, it’s free! So why not come a little early, bring a picnic and some friends, and make a night of it!”

All the ‘best bits’ of opera

“Golden Moments from Opera” is Hatstand’s flag ship show of hilarious scenes and heart-rending arias from the world’s favourite operas, presented in Hatstand’s informal and entertaining style. Expect lots of well-known items and some more unusual songs too, all performed with style and passion for a great evening of music and laughter. No need for surtitles either, as mezzo and compare Kirsty explains exactly what’s happening, who’s singing what – and why.  With a emphasis on making opera fun and easily digestible, it’s no wonder that Classic FM magazine declared “Nobody does opera quite like Hatstand Opera”!

The cast for this fun evening of opera features Australia soprano Toni Nunn, afore-mentioned baritone Jochem van Ast, and mezzo Kirsty Young (not the newsreader). At the piano will be Gill Ford, just before she jets off to Hong Kong for a month!
